Review of the Bakersfield Rocks Against Racism gig
It was a nice day and i got down to Jerry's Pizza earlier then the gig was suppose to start and there was absolutely no one down there , well i thought people will show up later on because it did start at noon on a Saturday and people were still sleeping it off from the night before , but as more often nowadays people couldn't be bothered to come out and show some support which started off as a good cause for concern today , especially in this political climate and the rise of racial hatred . Well what gig doesn't have some sort of complication , well this one did it seemed like right from the beginning , things got going real late (after 2 or something like that ) , local band canceled the day of event , bands running late and such , very few people showing up and half the crowd were the out of town bands . THE CAPSOULS started out with some northern soul/reggae music . they are a local band but i hardly ever get out so this was my first time seeing them play live and they were great and a very tight set .
Next up was the 3 piece L.A. thrash band SQUARE UP who raged thru their set , hell i thought the singer/bassist was gonna shake his fuckin head off .
Next and up last was L.A.'s hardcore band SHORT TEMPER which the singer/bassist from SQUARE UP also played in
It could've been a lot better if more people would had actually showed up but this is . Bakersfield after all so i wasn't surprised at all . There has been afternoon gigs here before but have more bigger local and out of town bands , but people just don't seem to care even if it's for a good cause , they would rather go see bands and get fucked up then give a shit about a cause . I'm probably gonna catch shit for saying this but when it comes down to it Bakersfield just don't really give a shit excepts for their own self centered ego's , and will listen to any bands even if there is proof those bands or band members have ties with racist/nazi groups . my favorite is and its been said by a lot of people "I like early Screwdriver , before they were a racist band " . Are you fucking serious , that band has horrible music and they are not or never will be skinheads . They are fuckin BONEHEADS . and thank you for the tree thank welcomed Ian with a solid crunch . So Enough of my ranting , A big shout out to Big Dave for setting this up and trying to do something positive and to the bands that played , you all were great and all nice people and glad to have met you all . There was suppose to be a couple speakers but i don't think that happened , i don't know i was back and forth all day and walking up and down stairs with a damaged knee and a cane so i was wore out . I tried to video the bands as much as i could and i had never used a Gopro camera until that day so the sound is not as clear as i would have liked it to have been . so here is what video i did take , would have liked to been the full set by the bands but there's always maybe another time .
And last here is the cdr comp "LOVE MUSIC , HATE FASCISM" that i did to hand out at the gig , and thank you to all the bands that are on it and a BIG thank you to Sam and RADICAL FUN TIME for the patches THE CAPSOULS
There's many antifascists and anarchists in Bakersfield. Nobody showed up because the promoters aren't well liked for many reasons.... and there's a cop in one of the bands that played.... and the show wasn't actually promoted. Other than a fb invite. So yeah. No.
